Checking Vehicle’s LTO Record

We’ve recently renewed the registration of our EcoSport and decided to check LTO’s info about our vehicle. To check, text “LTO VEHICLE <PLATE#>” to 2600. The service only appears to work during office hours.

Example (send to 2600):
LTO VEHICLE NAD4009

797 km in one Full Tank

When I was just learning how to drive, I was only getting around 352 km in one full tank. Three years later and after covering 65,000 km road distance, it has improved to about 797 km estimated range (700 km actual measured range on a Manila-Bataan-Manila-Bicol trip).

There are many factors that could impact fuel consumption, some of which are the traffic conditions, load the vehicle is carrying, proper tire pressure, selecting the correct gear and RPM, acceleration, condition of the vehicle, uphill or downhill roads, idling when stopped, temperature settings of your car’s climate control (air-con), installing various accessories that add weight to the car, driving habits, and many others. Among these factors, there is one that I think matters the most: how hard you step on the gas and how often you use the brakes.

Regardless of the car condition, a key factor to good fuel economy is the optimal management of resources—use just enough gas to move the vehicle and let it roll to a stop with very minimal use of the brakes. Every time you step on the gas pedal, you consume gas, and every time you step on the brakes, you are wasting that gas! The vehicle could have moved further, but you opted to stop it because you have given it way too much gas. Go easy on the gas pedal, and if you’ve been stepping on the brakes quite too often, then perhaps it is time re-evaluate your driving habits.

Adjusting the Steering Wheel Column

To achieve a comfortable driving posture, it may sometimes be necessary to adjust the position of the steering wheel. The wheel, which is held in place by the steering column, can be moved higher, lower, closer, and farther, depending on the driver’s preference.

To watch a video on how to adjust the position of the steering wheel of an EcoSport, head directly to Adjusting the Steering Wheel Column.

EcoSport’s Child Lock and Door Lock Feature

EcoSport has a feature that prevents opening of the door from inside (a child lock) and another feature that prevents opening of the door from outside (door lock). This video discusses how each feature is used, and the difference between the two.

EcoSport’s Rev Limiter

EcoSport’s rev limiter is a feature that helps prevent excessive engine revving by cutting off throttle input whenever you reach 6300 RPM, just below the red line. While a rev limiter helps prevent engine damage by setting a maximum limit, there are still instances in which damage may occur due to faulty driver input, such as shifting to lower gears at very high speeds, while at maximum RPM (doing so would shoot the RPM beyond the red line and very likely lead to catastrophic engine damage).

Replacing EcoSport’s Headlight Bulb

Every EcoSport owner must know how to replace the headlight bulbs. Not only that it is unsafe to drive with defective headlights, the law also requires turning the headlights on not later than one-half hour after sunset and until at least one-half hour before sunrise, and whenever weather conditions require—something you cannot comply with if your headlights are defective.

To replace a defective headlight bulb, follow the steps below:

1. Open the hood.
2. Remove the headlight cover.
3. Remove the bulb socket.
4. Remove the bulb (by removing the bulb’s clip).
5. Replace the bulb (H4).
6. Secure the bulb’s clip.
7. Replace the bulb’s socket.
8. Replace the headlight cover.
9. Close the hood.

Head Up Display (HUD) Road Test

A Head Up Display (HUD) is any transparent-display device that eliminates the need to look away in order to access information. It is usually placed horizontally on the dashboard so that its reflection can be seen clearly by the user, without having to look down on the instrument cluster, thus, keeping the ‘head up’. You may also install an HUD device on any compatible vehicle (e.g., with an OBDII port) such as an EcoSport

Installing an LTO RFID Sticker

We have finally received the registration plate of our EcoSport. LTO-issued plates come with a pair of stickers, one of which has an embedded RFID tag. The stickers must be installed on the windshield, behind the rear view mirror (installing one sticker on top of the other). In this video, I have shown how I installed the sticker set (one transparent and one with the RFID tag) in an EcoSport.
