Installing More 12V Ports in an EcoSport

You can never have enough 12V ports, well, at least in our EcoSport. I have installed three additional 12V ports or sockets on the underside of the glove box, in the front passenger-side foot well. As with every other 12V ports in our EcoSport, this one is also wired such that it has a fuse protection, and turns off once the ignition switch is off—a useful feature to prevent battery discharge.

Installing License Plates in an EcoSport

After 2 years of waiting, the license plates (or more accurately, the registration plates) of our EcoSport have finally arrived (you can check availability of plates in the LTO website).

In this video, I have discussed how I installed the front and rear license plates using a theft-deterrent type of screw called security screws. Security screws are no longer supplied with the plates, thus, must be purchased separately (you can buy 4 stainless-steel security screws complete with nut and washer for 100 pesos or 2 US dollars). Installing the plates with security screws requires some effort since you need to drill through the plastic material then place and tighten a nut on the other side.

Lock EcoSport’s Doors Even Without the Battery

Battery replacement is part of the regular car maintenance procedure. If battery failure happens on the road, there may be instances that you have to remove the battery. This poses a problem because most of us are accustomed to locking the doors with the remote. With the battery removed, you won’t be able to use the remote to lock the car.

In this video, I have discussed how to manually lock the car’s doors by turning a black knob on the side of the door, similar to a child lock knob. This is especially useful when you need to leave the car with a drained or removed battery.

Auto Power Off 12V Port

EcoSport’s 12V port remains on (powered) even when the engine is off. While this could be an advantage as there is no need to turn the engine on in order to charge a phone, some would prefer a 12V port that turns off automatically. In this video, I have modified the 12V port of my EcoSport (Trend MT) to disconnect power when the ignition key is in off position.

This modification requires the use of a DIY jumper.

To watch the video on how to modify the 12V port of an EcoSport so that it turns off automatically when the engine is off, head directly to Auto Power Off 12V Port.

EcoSport’s Hidden Menu

Did you know that EcoSport has a hidden menu? This is what is called the diagnostic mode, which can be accessed by pressing and holding a button while powering up the car’s instrument cluster. You can enter the diagnostic mode even while the engine is running, thus, providing valuable real-time data about the car’s engine. A technician may find it useful in diagnosing problems and checking the health of your vehicle.

Cooled Glove Box

A glove box is a standard feature on every vehicle. In an EcoSport, its glove box has an air-con vent, thus, keeping the contents of the box cool.

Open the glove box and look for the knob that controls the flow of air. Behind that knob is a tube where cool air blows out. To use this feature, turn the knob (clockwise or counterclockwise) until cool air flows through the hole.

I am not sure what will happen though if the air conditioning system is set to heater mode :)

Opening the Boot Door with the Remote

EcoSport owners are quick to notice that the third button in its remote is left unused. A simple modification, however, will activate this unused button. This modification will enable the remote key to open the boot door.

The hack is pretty simple—just put an eraser on the hollow space under the button!
The whole process will only take a few minutes, and does not require any special equipment.

Remote2

To open the boot door using the remote key, press unlock first, then press the third button twice (like a double click). This modification is applicable to Trend and Ambiente variants only. There is a different modification for Titanium variants since they are supplied with a different remote (I have yet to make a tutorial for that).

To watch the video on how to modify the remote, head directly to Opening the Boot Door with the Remote.
